Free Screening of Documentary Citizen Jane

September 23 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Free

Join Springfield Inner City Older Neighborhoods (ICON) and Downtown Springfield, Inc. for a free screening of the documentary, “Citizen Jane: Battle for the City.”

This is a story about our global urban future… It’s also a story about America’s recent urban past, in which bureaucratic, “top down” approaches to building cities… with little or no input from those who inhabit them…. Citizen Jane: Battle for the City shows that anti-democratic approaches to city planning and building are fundamentally unsustainable; a grassroots, “bottom up” approach is imperative to the social, economic, and ecological success of tomorrow’s global cities. (Official documentary website)

Jane Jacobs’ 1961 book The Death and Life of Great American Cities revolutionized how a generation of citizens view the urban space…she crusaded for the protection of neighborhoods and public infrastructure that give cities their flavor and verve. (Architectural Record)
