Every daytime bus route offered by SMTD services Downtown at the Capitol Avenue Transfer Center. Additionally,  4 night-time service routes (901,902,903 and 905) serving Downtown Monday-Friday can be accessed on the northside of the Old State Capitol (Washington between 5th/6th). These night time routes will run in 1 hour increments. (6:45pm, 7:45pm, 8:45pm and 9:45pm).

The Amtrak Lincoln Service will get you to/from Chicago (3.5 hrs) and St. Louis (2 hrs) via the Springfield Station at Jefferson & Third Street. The Springfield Station (SPI) offers enclosed waiting area and onsite parking. The Illinois High Speed Rail project on track to be completed Early 2107, is currently under construction to increase train speeds from 79mph to 110mph, decreasing the travel time from St. Louis to Chicago by an hour.

Walk Downtown

Located in the Central Business District, Downtown and all of its amenities are withing walking distance from the Medical District, Residential Neighborhoods, as well as the State Capitol Complex. Once Downtown, the sidewalks will take you to numerous museums, restaurants, shops, historic sites, nightlife, and entertainment venues.

Bike Downtown

Get and move around Downtown on two wheels! The Second Street bike route runs north and south connecting Downtown to the regions multimodal network. Bicycle parking is available at the many bike racks Downtown. Additionally, a bike fix station is located in the Bocce Garden of Obed & Isaac’s Microbrewery & Wm. Van’s Coffee House.


Downtown Springfield is conveniently located in the center of the City of Springfield.

6-minute drive from I-55/72 via Clear Lake Drive from the East
10-minute drive from I-55/72 via 6th Street from the South
5-minute drive from Veterans Parkway (route-4)/Jefferson/Madison from the West

Park Downtown

According to the Springfield-Sangamon County Regional Planning Commission, who analyzes downtown parking annually, we have plenty of spaces available for you to enjoy downtown. You may just not realize where you can park! Street parking is free after 5 p.m. on weekdays and free all day on Saturdays and Sundays.
