BE THE STAR OF YOUR OWN HOLIDAY SPECIAL
Downtown Springfield is the perfect backdrop for your holiday season! Just like our favorite Hallmark movies, spending time in the downtown district allows you to create your own story line of holiday magic…
Click on each day below to storyboard your own personal Hallmark movie:
For the Romantic
Your personal movie entitled “Christmas Connection” might include a meet-cute at a trendy bar, followed by a romantic dinner. End it all with a stroll through a few shops and take a selfie under the twinkling Plaza lights. If you have young children, consider dropping the kids at Kidzeum for a Parent’s Night Out to live out this movie fantasy!
For the Family
You’ve dealt with kids underfoot for a few cold weeks now. Your “Wish for Christmas” includes your own adorable but rowdy kids enjoying the crisp night air by petting the horses and jumping on the horse-drawn carriage ride, followed by a visit to Santa. And hot chocolate from a nearby shop!
For the Party Planner in the Office
Just like “Best Christmas Party Ever,” your colleagues look to you to create fun experiences for the group. Leave work and head downtown dressed in your best ugly holiday sweaters. Head out in teams to find the BEST ornament in the downtown shops and meet up an hour later to compare notes over a winter-themed beverage.
FREE ACTIVITIES THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS
Whatever your budget, you can experience the holiday in downtown Springfield, thanks to our generous corporate and family sponsors. They allow us to provide many of these experiences at no cost, including Santa in the Old State Capitol, Santa Mail Box and horse-drawn carriage rides by Red Gate Farm.

New! Holiday Market on the Plaza
New! On three Saturdays — November 30, December 7 and xxxxx — we are hosting an outdoor Holiday Market on the Old State Capitol Plaza. Featured vendors include Rolling Scones Bakehouse, Margaret Drive Art, Whimsy Tea Company, Black Cat Home Bakery, Natural Artistry, Flora Roasting Co, Independent Mary Kay Beauty Consultant Sandra Mate, A Lil’ Sumpin’ Special, Springfield Community Broadcasters and Staunztastic Art.
Free Parking All December
Parking is free on the street during all of the Holiday Walks. Again this year, DSI worked with the City of Springfield to provide free parking during the daytime shopping hours throughout December as well. The area where shoppers can park for free at meters is 4th Street to 7th Street, Monroe Street to Washington Street. However, parking illegally or in an unlawful areas including bus or loading zones, yellow curb, no parking, and accessible spaces is not allowed at any time. Shoppers simply need to get a parking permit labeled “Shoppers” from one of the participating businesses and put it on their car’s dashboard nearest the curb to enjoy this holiday parking perk. Merchants will date and sign the permit, which is only good for that day. If a shopper should mistakenly receive a parking ticket within the designated free parking area, the tag may be enclosed with the ticket and mailed back to the city, with no fine imposed.
Window Decorating Contest
All December, people can vote for their favorite decorated windows in Downtown Springfield. The winner of the Popular Vote will be given an award at DSI’s Annual Dinner & Awards on January 16, 2020. Nearly 30 locations are being decorated by either the business owners themselves, or volunteers looking to make windows in vacant buildings more festive. People can make their votes for $1 each online, the proceeds of which benefit DSI and its nonprofit mission.
Santa in the Old State Capitol
Free! Visit Mr. and Mrs. Claus in the Old State Capitol. Stay cozy and enjoy kids’ activities and History Comes Alive presentations while you wait to see the Big Guy himself!
Horse-Drawn Carriage Rides
Free! Red Gate Farms will pick up riders every ten minutes from 5th and Adams. They also provide blankets for warmth when it’s cold outside.
