How do museums use plants in modern day research? Find out on this virtual behind-the-scenes tour of the Illinois State Museum’s herbarium, home to the museum’s botany collection, and the archaeobotany lab, where plant material from archaeological sites are studied. Curator of Botany Dr. Hong Qian will open the cabinets of the herbarium and discuss how specimens are stored and used in research. Archaeology Research Associate Marge Schroeder will show how plants can provide a window into the historic and prehistoric past.

This program is part of the Big Read Sangamon County sponsored by LLCC Academy of Lifelong Learning. The NEA Big Read: Sangamon County will focus on “Lab Girl” by Hope Jahren. NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowments for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest. #NEABigRead
