Event Details

Downtown Springfield, Inc.’s activation event, Downtown Open Streets, temporarily opens our downtown streets to people and closes them to cars. “People traffic” replaces car traffic and the streets become “paved parks,” where people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds can come out and improve their health for FREE — thanks to premier sponsor Memorial Medical Center.

Enjoy this unique opportunity to experience downtown up close and personal without cars zooming by. You can take over the street on foot and bicycle — or scooter — with pets on leashes — on rollerblades — in wheelchairs — whatever makes you get a move-on!
Check out the event feed for partner announcements- we will have a bike corral, bike course, community workouts and health screenings in addition to being able to roam around the streets — all for free.

Downtown businesses will welcome you with tasty lunches, coffee, shopping specials.

The Open Street concept first appeared in larger U.S. cities approximately 10 years ago. Over 80,000 people attended Atlanta Streets Alive event in 2014. The New York, Summer Streets claims 250,000 attendees. The concept has now spread to smaller cities, including Missoula, MT, Las Cruces, NM, Fargo, ND, Lincoln, NE and Edmond, OK.
