Event Details

Description: Join in the holiday spirit at the Illinois State Museum. View the Memorial Holiday Fest wreath display and enjoy activities including creating an ornament for the Museum’s Community Tree, Hanukkah sign or paper menorah, and building a holiday candy house to withstand an earthquake in a fun winter S.T.E.A.M. challenge. Visitors will also enjoy a holiday family photo op and a scavenger hunt. At 5:30 and 6:15 p.m., Curator of History Erika Holst will present a flash talk on Strange Christmas History. Christmas in the United States wasn’t always Santa Claus and snowmen. Holst will discuss lesser-known holiday traditions from two centuries of Christmases past, including Colonial rowdiness, creepy cards, Civil War propaganda Santa, and slightly less friendly Christmas characters like Krampus, Belsnickel, and Gryla and the Yule Lads. Both flash talks will be live-streamed to the ISM Facebook page. Registration not required. All visitors ages 2 and older must wear a mask and social distancing will be enforced. Activities available while supplies last and holiday passports will be stamped.
