Everyone knows Dr. Ruth Westheimer from her career as a pioneering radio and television sex therapist. Few, however, know the incredible journey that preceded it. From fleeing the Nazis in the Kindertransport and joining the Haganah in Jerusalem as a sniper, to her struggle to succeed as a single mother newly-arrived in America, author Mark St. Germain deftly illuminates this remarkable woman’s untold story.
Becoming Dr. Ruth is filled with the humor, honesty and life-affirming spirit of Karola Ruth Siegel, the girl who became “Dr. Ruth,” America’s most famous sex therapist.
The Hoogland’s production is co-directed by John Paris and Joe-Michael Jackson. Popular, local actress Felicia Coulter plays Dr. Ruth Westheimer in this illuminating one-person show.
Felicia Coulter has been seen at the Hoogland Center for the Arts as Quiser Boudreau in Steel Magnolias, Jeri Neal McFeeley in The Dixie Swim Club, Cookie Cusack in Rumors and Sonia in Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike at HCFTA. She appeared as the Grand Duchess Olga Katrina in You Can’t Take It With You at Playhouse on the Square in Jacksonville. Some of her other favorite roles over the years have been Mom in Leaving Iowa and Lucille in Dividing the Estate, both at New Salem’s Theatre in the Park and Ida in Mornings at Seven and Kate in The Taming of the Shrew, both at Springfield Theatre Centre.
Single streaming tickets are $15 and group/family streaming tickets are $20 (for a group of 2 or more people watching in a single household).
