Do habit tracker apps actually make a difference, or are they just trendy?

I've been seeing a lot of habit tracker apps lately, and I'm wondering if they're actually useful or just the latest fad. Do they really help people stick to their goals, or do they just end up being another app that gets forgotten after a week? I'm a sucker for a good trend, but only if it works.
